“When you fall, you get back up, you minimize your mistake, and you KEEP GOING.” — Shannon Miller, Women Will Save the World.
Shannon Miller is the founder of Shannon Miller Lifestyle: Health and Fitness for Women. She is also the most decorated American gymnast in history and the only female athlete inducted into the U.S. Olympics Hall of Fame – and honor she achieved not once but twice!
In the ALP compilation, “Women Will Save the World,” Shannon shares a unique perspective on what it means to be a trailblazer. She writes, “What is trailblazing, but simply going a little further than the women who came before us?” Doing gymnastics taught Shannon how to put a spin on failure. She learned that something that could be seen as “bad” could also end up being a catalyst for something better. For example, while training for the Olympic Trials, she landed wrong, dislocating and breaking her left elbow. She got up and refocused, pushing further and harder than ever. She not only made the team, she walked home with more medals than any other American athlete, from any sport!
Shannon was able to bring the lessons she learned on the mat and apply them to other trying situations throughout her life. When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she “focused her priorities … I had a new long-term goal: to live.” She may have been temporarily knocked down, but she got up and she kept going, faster, stronger, and harder than before.
