“I may be kindly, I am ordinarily gentle, but in my line of business I am obliged to will terribly what I will at all.” — Catherine the Great.
As Empress, Catherine the Great used her personal strength to transform Russia into one of the most powerful countries in the world. — “Women Will Save the World.”
Catherine was married to the Grand Duke Peter of Holstein who later succeeded his mother as Russian Emperor. When he proved to be a shoddy leader, Catherine removed him from the throne and took over. She became the longest-ruling female leader in Russia. She revitalized the country and promoted the Russian Enlightenment, all while expanding the country’s borders over 200,000 square miles to the Black Sea and into Central Europe.
This would be a remarkable accomplishment by today’s standards, and Catherine did it in 1762! She was strong, as well as independent, and she fully demonstrated how one woman’s strength can impact the world.
